Ocklawaha Canoe Outpost & Resort: A Hidden Gem for Outdoor Enthusiasts

FORT MCCOY, FL - Flowing against the norm, the Ocklawaha River stands out as one of the rare rivers in the United States that gracefully flows south to north. Nestled in the heart of Florida, it boasts breathtaking beauty, making it one of the most captivating waterways in the state. Recently, I embarked on an unforgettable weekend camping expedition alongside a group of passionate environmental advocates, braving the 30-degree temperature. Our collective mission was to immerse ourselves in the wonders of nature while brainstorming innovative strategies to preserve the invaluable ecosystem, safeguard wildlife, and promote overall health.

As the first light of dawn broke, we eagerly sprang out of bed, determined to load our kayaks onto the waiting van. These sleek vessels were about to embark on an unforgettable journey, gliding through the enchanting wilderness for eight miles. With great care, we gently lowered the kayaks into the glistening water, ready to begin our thrilling expedition. The mesmerizing sunrise and the refreshing mist created by the meeting of cool air and warm water enveloped us completely, putting us in a world of wonder. Clad in snug beanies and cozy pullover hoodies, we reveled in every moment when the sun's rays pierced through the thick canopy, offering us much-needed warmth and a chance to bask in its radiant glow.

As we journeyed downstream, gliding effortlessly with the gentle current, a delightful array of wildlife greeted us along the river banks. Turtles and alligators basked in the sun while our eyes were captivated by the sight of various bird species, such as Swallow-tailed Kites, Cooper's Hawks, and wild turkeys. Not only that, but we were also fortunate enough to spot rabbits and graceful white-tailed deer. Eventually, we stumbled upon a secluded stretch of the river bank, where we decided to pause and unwind. The melodious chirping of birds filled the air, harmonizing with the soothing sound of trickling water, creating a serene ambiance that enveloped us completely.

This trip can be made within a span of three hours, yet our entire day was consumed by the river for a total of six hours. Our remarkable expedition began at the Ocklawaha Canoe Outpost and Resort, where we made reservations. They graciously provided us with kayaks and transportation to the starting point, and we concluded our adventure at their splendid campground. After returning to our campsite, we ignited a cozy fire, prepared a delicious dinner, and indulged in the pleasure of stargazing and engaging in profound conversations throughout the night. This outing allowed us to break free from our mundane routines and immerse ourselves in the wonders of nature, which we all cherish dearly.

As the sun ascended and cast its radiant glow through the lush greenery, a refreshing mist danced in the cool air, mingling with the soothing warmth of the water.

This kayak journey occurred during the winter season in Florida, specifically in the chilly month of January, when the temperatures drop to 30 degrees at night.
